I came across this pattern for a lovely textured but easy knit blanket for beginners called Ross’s blanket while looking for a knitting stitch that I could use in knitted dishcloths. I love making them because they are quick, easy and don’t take too much yarn. The problem is that I need to find a new stitch each time as I get bored doing the same one too often.
The design, by Aurora Knits is for a blanket that comes in eleven different sizes – from 20 by 27 cm all the way up to 120 by 165cm. It can be adapted for any size blanket you want by casting on more stitches and adding in more repeats of the pattern.
It was created for the World Wide Knit in Public Day (2018 event) using The Yarn Dispensary’s Sublime Extra Fine Merino yarn.

Where to Get the Pattern
Either click the image or this link to visit the website from which you can download the instructions. The pattern is free, too.
It involves only the knit and purl basic stitches, so it is a good one for new knitters to tackle.
The blanket has a garter stitch border all the way around, and the main body inside of the border has a 4-row repeat, so once you get the idea, it is easy to carry on without consulting the instructions.
Type of Yarn?
The original instructions recommended Sublime extra fine Merino yarn, which appears to be hard to source at the time of writing this pos,t so any double knitting weight will work just as easily. In fact any yarn will work but the size will change of course. If you use a different yarn then Aurora Knits recommends that you use one needle size smaller than the recommended size for that yarn.
Needle Size?
For the recommended yarn, which is double knitting, the pattern designer suggests that you use a 3.75mm needle, which is a size less than the recommended 4mm for this weight of yarn. Lovecrafts has a huge selection of this weight of yarn that you can view HERE
Other Equipment Needed?
A large eyed blunt end tapestry type needle is needed to weave in your ends once the knitting is complete.
You will also need some stitch markers for knitting to keep track of where you need to change the stitch type.
Knitting Skills in the Pattern
The instructions are set for a beginner knitter, and therefore, you only need to know
- how to cast on and
- cast off, and
- how to do the knit stitch and
- how to purl.
What I like about this pattern is that it comes with instructions to make 11 sizes of blankets. The textured stitch can be adapted to make a variety of items such as dishcloths, washcloths for the bathroom, bath mats, table runners and placemats and even coasters.
