There’s something extra special about decorating your home with handmade touches at Christmas. A knitted tiny tree Christmas ornament brings that bit of cosy charm we all crave this time of year and a reminder that the best things often come in the smallest stitches.

These little trees are perfect projects for starting your festive knitting. They knit up quickly, use only a scrap or two of yarn, and can be as simple or fancy as you like. Hang them on your tree, tie one onto a wrapped gift, or tuck a few around the house as decorations. Your home will end up having its own unique Christmas atmosphere.

In this post, I’m sharing some of my favourite knitted tiny tree ornament patterns that are both flat and 3D. They are quick to knit, fun to customise, and lovely to give away as little gifts.

Flat Knitted Tiny Tree Ornaments

If you’re new to festive knitting, flat ornaments are the perfect place to start. They’re simple, quick, and ideal for using up leftover yarn. They’re knitted flat and seamed or simply decorated; you can easily add embroidered stars, beads, or tiny buttons to make each one unique.

Watch the video below, which shows you how to knit small flat trees that will work as decorations to go on gifts. You can also hang them on a tree or around your home. Another idea would be to add them to Christmas cards

Simple Flat Christmas Tree Patterns done on Straight Needles

These are beginner-friendly patterns that knit up in about half an hour. You can leave it plain for a minimalist look or decorate it with tiny buttons as baubles.

I like the textures on these that has been achieved through the use of different stitches – and the use of the stripes. These would look good as tags on Christmas gifts wrapped in red paper so that the cream yarn stands out.

In this pattern, you will notice that the outline has a zig-zag appearance, which is more interesting than the simple triangle in the previous pattern. Using a fluffier yarn gives them a more realistic look. Add small beads for interest and appeal.

Striped Tiny Tree Ornament – You could customise the patterns above by working in garter stitch with alternating colours.

Textured Knitted Flat Tree Designs

A slightly more advanced appearance of the flat versions would be to add texture by using different stitch patterns as seen in this design below.

Festive Tip: Use a touch of metallic thread or a strand of tinsel yarn held together with your main yarn for a subtle sparkle. It’s an easy way to make your knitted tiny tree ornaments shimmer under the lights.

3D Knitted Tiny Tree Ornaments

If you’re ready for something a little more dimensional, 3D knitted tiny tree ornaments are a delight to make. These miniature trees stand up beautifully on their own, hang perfectly on the Christmas tree, and make the sweetest finishing touch on a wrapped gift.

Some of the so-called 3D tree ornaments are actually knitted flat, then seamed to give a 3D look. Take a look at this one below

Other 3D versions are worked in the round or shaped with simple increases and decreases, then lightly stuffed to hold their form. They are quick projects and the kind you can finish in an evening with a cup of tea and a Christmas film playing in the background.

Try this idea: Knit a few of these trees in different shades of green, from pale sage to deep forest, and arrange them as a “mini knitted forest.” They look adorable grouped on a shelf or windowsill as a handmade nod to the festive season.

How to Use Your Knitted Tiny Tree Ornaments

Once you’ve made a few of these little treasures, you’ll find endless ways to use them around your home. Of course, hanging them on the Christmas tree is the natural choice for them as ornaments. Also, a knitted tiny tree ornament adds a lovely handmade touch wherever it goes.

Here are a few ideas to inspire you:

  • Gift toppers: Tie one onto a wrapped present for a thoughtful, reusable decoration.
  • Table settings: Pop a little tree beside each place setting or use them as name-card holders.
  • Garlands & wreaths: String several together for a cosy, rustic garland or add them to a wreath for extra texture.
  • Mini displays: Group a few 3D trees on a shelf, windowsill, or mantelpiece for a charming winter scene.

These ornaments are small enough to make in batches, perfect for craft fairs or charity stalls and they’re such a joy to give. I love seeing the reaction I get when I give them to my family, especially after I have matched the colours to their tastes.

Small Knits, Big Joy

Whether you go for a flat design or a plump little 3D version, each knitted ornament carries that unmistakable warmth of something made by hand. They’re quick, satisfying, and a lovely way to bring more handmade magic to the holidays.

So why not cast on a few tonight? Turn on the fairy lights, make yourself a cappucino, and start your own little forest of festive trees.
