When searching for knitting project ideas for the festive season, I came across this Christmas elf knitting pattern that is knitted flat on 2 needles. It is more suitable for beginners. If you have been disappointed with a pattern for these adorable Christmas toys because it was done on circulars, then this one is for you.
However, if you love using circular needles, take a look at this one, which is done in the round ==> elf pattern knitted in the round.

Aran and worsted weights of yarn are recommended as well as double-knit yarn. Double knitting yarn yields a slightly smaller elf – 15 inches (38cms), while with Aran yarn, it comes out at 17 inches (43 cms).
100g of a green colour is required, and 50g of the others – ie white, red and the skin colour.
Needle Size?
If you’re going to use the Aran yarn you’ll need 3.5mm (US 4) and 4 mm ( US 6) single point needles. When using double-knit yarn, you will need 3.0mm (US 3) and 3.5mm (US 4)
Other Equipment to Complete
- toy Stuffing
- 12mm safety eyes – smaller size if you do the double knit
- 2 buttons for the dungarees
- bells for the hat and shoes
- tapestry needle to sew up the flat pieces
Making up Guide for Jingle Jangle
What I appreciate about this Christmas elf knitting pattern is that you get a comprehensive 7 page guide on exactly how to make up the elf. I have come across several patterns that gloss over this section. It can be frustrating when you have put the effort into your knitting, and are not sure of how to make it look like the picture. The designer has included numerous photos of each stage of the makeup process. So you know exactly what to do – step by step.
The elf can be used as a Christmas decoration or as a toy. What is useful are the instructions that are given if you want to make it a decoration and have it sitting on a shelf. The suggestion given means that the item can be washed without adverse effects.
There are exact instructions on how to create the face so you know what to do here.
Knitting Stitches Used in the Pattern
The knitting skills you need to know are how to –
- Cast on and off
- knit and purl
- increase by knitting into the front and back of a stitch
- decrease by knitting or purling stitches together
So, as you can see, this is a beginner-friendly elf knitting pattern.
