Free Throw Knitting Pattern for Beginners- easily personalised to your colour scheme

I like to find easy designs for new knitters to tackle. I found this one, which is a free throw knitting pattern for beginners. After downloading it, I discovered it is perfect as it’s done in garter stitch, so ideal for that first project.

In addition, what I like about this one is that it uses an array of coloured yarn to add interest to what would otherwise be a simple and plain item. The recommended yarn – Paintbox Simply Chunky -comes in a big range of 55 shades, so it will be easy to customise your own palette.

We hear the word “throw” used a great deal, but if you think about it, throws are by definition accessorising casual blankets that have the purpose of adding a bit of decor to a room. For example, you can use them draped over the end of a bed or couch. When you do this, you can tie them in with the colour scheme you have in that room. As a gift for family and friends, you could match them to the decor in their home.

That is why I like this pattern as it allows you to personalise the colours of yarn you choose to match with your decor scheme – and the Paintbox yarns have a big range from which to make that choice.

This design has 8 colours, but you can change that as you wish. I plan to make one for a spare bedroom that we have, which is done in blue, and green. There are several shades of blue and green in that palette that I could incorporate.

The final project will measure around 91cm (36 inches ) wide by 122cm ( 48 inches) long. The instructions do come with an extra design to make a baby blanket in the same format – easy garter stitch for new knitters.

Yarn?

A chunky weight of yarn is used for this project. The large range of colours in the Simply Chunky Paintbox Yarn range makes it a good choice. A heavier weight of yarn like the chunky is perfect for beginners as it’s easier to see the stitches you are making, and it knits up quickly which is encouraging when you are new to this hobby.

Needle Size?

A 6mm (US size 10) knitting needle will match with the chunky yarn that this pattern recommends.

As this project ends up being quite large and therefore you’ll need to cast on a large number of stitches I would suggest that a circular needle would be a good idea. New knitters need not be worried about using circulars, as for flat knitting, they work exactly as straight single-pointed needles. They have a long cable that connects the two points. This length of cable is what will hold all those many stitches and the bulk of the work will sit in your lap. This means less strain on your hands. I would suggest that an 80cm circular knitting needle would be fine for this project.

What Else Do You Need?

You will need to have a tapestry needle to sew in the ends at the end of your work.

It also has a way of making that plain design into a more interesting finished project by the clever use of different colours of yarn.
