While looking for a free pattern to use up some of my stash of yarn, I came across this easy knitting pattern for a teddy that is made from knitting a simple square. It is a creation from Marion Starr, who has set up the Aussie Knitting Threads website.

Yarn to Use?

In the instructions to make this delightful little toy, you will see that it is created out of double knitting weight of yarn, or 8 ply as they call it in Australia. I feel sure you could use any yarn that you have to hand. The difference will be that the size will change depending on which weight of yarn and needles you use. For the double knitting yarn, it is suggested that you use 3.75mm needles.

To make a similar toy like the one in the image, you will need 5 colours. Of course, the beauty of this project is that you can customise your version as you wish.

How do you Make up the Teddy?

As you will see when you look at the instructions on her website, the pattern is very simple. Most of the square is knitted in garter stitch ( knit stitches in every row), which makes up the body of the toy. The last part of the square is done in stockinette stitch, and that goes to make up the head. You knit the different colours for varying numbers of row,s and these go to make up his clothes and body.

The bear’s body is created by the clever way in which it is sewn up. You will see how easy it is to do when you view the instructions on the website.

I love the creativity in this project and the simplicity of it. It’s an ideal project for a new knitter to take on.
