Comforter Blanket Knitting Pattern – Finished Project

I found this easy comforter blanket knitting pattern, ideal for beginners, while looking for a project to use up remnants of yarn that I was given. Not only does it use many different colours, but some of the sections only need a small amount of yarn. As I dislike waste, I thought I could adapt this design slightly to use up bits and pieces of leftover yarn.

The Comforter Blanket Design

When you download the design which is available at no cost ( just click the image to be taken to the website ) you’ll see that it is made from 12 squares arranged and joined together in four rows of 3 squares. Once sewn together the project is given a seed stitch border made by picking up stitches on each of the ends – top and bottom short ends first, then the longer side edges.

Yarn Type?

You will also notice that it is made from the Super Chunky Wool Mix Paintbox yarn range. This heavier weight of yarn would make a lovely warm blanket. Chunky yarns are a good choice for new knitters as they knit up quickly. It’s satisfying to see your project unfold in a short space of time. When using thicker yarns, it’s easier to see the definition of each stitch, and so easier to see if you have made a mistake. Overall chunky yarns are beginner-friendly.

Needles Size?

As the recommended yarn is a super chunky weight, the needle size that corresponds with this would be 10mm needles.

This project is ideally suited to a beginner knitter as it only uses the knit and purl stitches. Each square is knitted separately. This means that a new knitter can make each one as a part of the bigger project. Completing one square is an achievement in itself. Some squares are all done in one colour of yarn, and others have two to four yarn colour changes. This gives practice in changing to a new yarn.

Other Supplies or Skills Needed?

As well as the knit and purl knitting knowledge, you’ll need to know 2 other techniques, which are not difficult once you see how they’re done.

You will need to know how to seam the knitted squares together neatly. Here is a video that demonstrates the technique when joining garter stitch squares together.

You’ll also need to know how to pick up stitches when knitting the border. Watch the video below to see how this is done.

What I like about this comforter blanket knitting pattern is the many ways in which it can be customised to make it more personal. You can either do it with the exact colours and weight of yarn recommended, or you could also change the colours to suit a particular decor scheme you have in your home. I plan to just use what shades I have already lying around to reduce my stash – a child will love all the different colours.
