If you’re searching online for free knitting patterns for baby blankets that have texture and are easy to do, take a look at this one. It involves knitting only purls and the knit stitch – no other skills required. I was looking for an easy pattern I could do while watching TV in the evenings that did not need too much concentration.
I needed a design that would be quite warm as it is for my niece’s newborn, premature baby boy. As you can see in the image, this design creates little pockets so I thought he should be quite cosy underneath it. The yarn used is a chunky weight, so that would make it a warm blanket.

Time & Project Complexity
While I was knitting this design from Diana Poirier, people would often come up close to examine it as from far it looks like it’s quite complicated – which it is not.
It is based on an 18-row repeat. After a couple of times of repeating the basket weave style of design, it becomes easy to see what to do on the next row – so really simple.
As it’s a blanket, it was not a super quick project but ideal to pick up and do in the evenings while watching my favourite TV programs.
What Knitting Yarn and Needles are Required?
Yarn
This design calls for a chunky weight of yarn, which makes it quicker and easier for beginners to handle.
I was given 6 balls of Robin chunky yarn from a friend who was clearing out her stash so I used them all on this project. It meant that the blanket was longer too. The pattern calls for 4 by 100g balls of a chunky yarn like the Paintbox Simply Chunky range.
Knitting Needles Size?
I used an 80cm circular needle 6 mm (US size 10) from KnitPro, which allowed the weight of the blanket to be held on my lap and not pull on my hands and arms. Using a circular knitting needle to knit a blanket like this is the same as using 2 straight knitting needles. If you use 2 straight needles you will struggle with so many stitches pushed onto the shorter needles.

Tips
I noticed that this baby blanket design does not have a border to it so I wanted to make sure that the edges were as neat as I could make them. After searching online, I found this easy technique that created a neat edge in knitting. It gave the look of small beads to the edges. I have shared the video below and the method I used starts at 1:35 minutes in.
Summary
I am pleased to have found this design. The image below shows how my project turned out.

I feel that it’s a perfect blanket for a baby’s cot and is ideal for those who have just learned how to do the knit and purl stitches in knitting and want a project to tackle. I recommend this design.
