I came across this multicoloured high-neck drop-shoulder sweater knitting pattern while searching for a project for a friend who is a beginner knitter. It makes a lovely fall sweater with the shades used.

The striking feature about this design by Siv Kristin Olsen is the many shades that have been used in it with such great effect.
At first glance, you’d think it was a complicated Fair Isle project but on a closer look, it is clear that most of it is made up of 4 to 5-row stripes. There are four sections in the design that each has 2 rows in which two colours are used – which is the Fair Isle technique as both of those different coloured yarns will be carried across the row during knitting. This will not be difficult to master. Here is a Fair Isle Knitting Tutorial for beginners if you need it.
What Yarn Do You Use?
The garment was made using a Super Chunky weight of yarn
Sometimes I find that the recommended yarn is not available. I tend to look at the details of the fibre and try to choose one that is a good match and corresponds with the tension needed. This site is helpful when looking for substitutes.
What I find helpful also is to see what other reviewers have used.
For this garment, I see that one maker has successfully used several shades of Lion Brand Hometown USA as well as 2 shades from this Stylecraft Life Super Chunky yarn
Yet another maker has used only MillaMia Naturally Soft Super Chunky for the whole project.
So it seems that many brands of super chunky yarn will do just fine.
Needles?
As this is a fitted garment, you’ll need to knit a swatch to check that you get gauge with the yarn you’ve chosen to use. The recommended needle size is between 10 and 12mm, depending on the yarn you choose.
Be careful to buy enough yarn, as there is nothing more frustrating than running short when doing a project like this.
This project has been labelled as suitable for beginner-level knitters.
I particularly like the colours that have been used in this design – a fall sweater for sure. The way the creator has put them together to create her design is appealing, too. The garment can be knitted in a longer version, which would be my preference.
