Simple Sleeveless Knitted Vest Womens Pattern for Beginners

women knitted vest pattern in cream yarn worn by young lady

With the rather unusual warmer winter we are experiencing this year, I found myself searching for a simple women’s knitted vest pattern that would be suited to beginner-level knitting skills.

I found this one which, though basic, does have a timeless appeal and would be so useful as a layer in the changeable weather at this time of year.

This tank top has a V-neck and matching ribbing around the armholes and at the waist. I like that it has quite a long section of ribbing around the waist area. The rest of the garment is done in an easy stockinette stitch.

What is the Suggested Yarn?

The designers of this project have used a soft ivory- coloured yarn in a double knitting weight.

The specific yarn they have used is the Hayfield Soft Twist DK which is 90 per cent acrylic and 10 per cent Merino wool. Other double knitting yarns will work well too – just make sure you get gauge before starting the pattern.

The thing I like about this yarn is that you can use a machine wash 40-degree delicate wash cycle with it and a low heat tumble dry.

As an example, for the medium size, you’ll need just 3 balls of this yarn to complete the project.

Size of Needles?

You will also need to have a pair of 30 cm long single-pointed straight needles in 4mm (US 6) and in 3.25mm (US 3) sizes.

To work the neckline, you will also need to use a stitch holder

What Knitting Skills are Needed?

This pattern gives instructions on how to construct the V-neck. Follow the step-by-step instructions in the pattern, and you should be just fine – it’s a technique that might be new but is easily accomplished. If you need to see a video to get an idea of how it’s done, I find YouTube.com very helpful for this.

This project would be useful for those who are looking for a simple pattern because they are beginners. However, it would be just as useful for those who are experienced and want a quick project to do.

It offers areas that allow a beginner to progress and learn a new technique – in this case learning how to work a V-neck in knitting.

What I like about this design is that for a small investment and a bit of time making it up you will be rewarded with a garment that can be worn in several seasons of the year. The first one might take a little longer, but once you have done that, you can make several in different colours to match other outfits for a small fraction of the cost they are in the shops.
