first sweater knitting pattern for beginners
Knit your first sweater with this pattern for beginners

Are you searching for your first sweater knitting pattern for beginners? Now that you have learned the basic knitting stitches, you’ll want to make a fitted garment for yourself or maybe even for someone in the family.

I found this design that is perfect for beginners to use. It uses simple knitting stitches and has step-by-step instructions that will ensure you’re successful.

Although we’d all love to be able to dive into making a beautiful lacey design, it is better to make something easier first and then progress slowly once you learn how to do more complicated and advanced techniques.

What knitting skills should you know?

For this starter jumper design, you will need to be able to

  • cast on and cast off
  • do the knit and purl stitches
  • do the 1 by 1 ribbing, which is knit one, purl one
  • decrease by the k2together method – ie knitting 2 stitches together at the same time – right slanting decrease
  • decrease by doing the left-leaning ssk method – ie slip one, slip another, both done knitwise, then knit those 2 stitches through the front of the loops.

What Type of Yarn Do You Need?

Super chunky yarn is recommended for this project. I like using this weight of yarn as it knits up quickly. You are then able to see the results of your efforts sooner, and that will spur you on to finish the project. Here is a range that would be suitable to use – Paintbox Yarns Wool Mix Super Chunky range

This range is made from a blend of 50 per cent wool and 50 of acrylic fibres. It comes as 100g balls and a big range of 48 colour shades.

Knitting Needle Size?

As you will be using a super chunky yarn weight, you’ll need 10 mm (US 15) needles.

The jumper is made up from knitting 4 panel pieces –

  • the front
  • the back
  • and 2 sleeves

The panels are seamed together. Along with the instructions for the simple jumper, there is also a slightly different design that involves adding ribbing to the sleeve cuffs and a ribbed v neckline if you wish to attempt that one.

Instructions are given for seven sizes from extra small to 3XL. These are colour coded so you just have to pick out the colour for your size as you follow the pattern.
