Easy Baby Blanket Knitting Pattern Textured Knit & Purl

Easy Baby Blanket Knitting Pattern – Finished Project

As I had some baby Aran yarn left over, I was looking for an easy baby blanket knitting pattern that was textured and only used the basic knit and purl stitches. I found one that fitted all my criteria perfectly. It’s very easy to do, and at the end of the project, the appearance is so attractive you’d never realise how easy it was to make. The design of the back of the blanket is such that I consider it reversible, too.

The design is by Julia G. Looking at her collection of designs, you can see that she specialises in baby blanket projects. The textured designs she incorporates into them are very attractive.

Pattern Design

Size

The finished blanket done in DK yarn comes out at around 53 cm (21 inches ) by 76 cm (30 inches), and in Aran it will be 76 cm (30 inches) by 91 cm (36 inches). The exact size will depend on the yarn you use.

Border – Seed Stitch

It has a seed stitch border all the way around it.

Main Body of Blanket

The central section of this baby blanket is made up of larger stripes of stockinette stitch and smaller sections of garter stitch which gives it the texture.

Suitable for Beginners or Quick Project for Advanced Knitters

Those who have had a break from knitting will find this design a good one to get back into the way of knitting. If you have just learned how to knit, then this is also an ideal project for you as you’ll get practice in doing the basic knit and purl stitches. More skilled knitters can use it as a quick project to make.

How to Get the Pattern

When you click the image of the blanket, or HERE, you will be taken to the website where you can, for a small investment that supports the designer, purchase the instructions. You will be able to download them straight away.

What Yarn is Needed?

The recommended yarn for this project is a baby Aran weight yarn, such as the Stylecraft Special for Babies Aran brand. You will need 3 balls – 300g (about 552 metres ) to complete the design.

Needle Size?

The instructions recommend 6mm single-point knitting needles if you are using the suggested baby Aran yarn. You will need to have long needles – at least 30cm long so that all the stitches can fit on them and you can knit comfortably. I would use circular needles for this blanket project so the weight of the growing project is held in your lap and does not pull on your arms.

Skills Needed to do this project?

When taking a glance at this baby blanket, it looks complex, but it really is not. To do it, you will be surprised to discover that all you need to know is how to –

  1. cast on and off
  2. how to do the knit stitch
  3. how to do the purl stitch
  4. stockinette stitch – knit on the right side and purl on the other
  5. garter stitch – knit every row
  6. seed stitch – knit one, purl one along the row, then do purl one, knit one on the next row

In summary, this design is an easy baby blanket knitting pattern that would make an ideal first project for a beginner who has learned how to do the basic knitting stitches.
