This baby sweater knitting pattern is perfect for new knitters looking for a first project to do, as it only requires basic knitting skills to complete. If you have not knitted in a while and are looking to get back into the hobby, then this is a good pattern to use.

The garment is made from two simple squares knitted using garter stitch only. The sleeves are shaped using simple increasing techniques that beginners can do. The instructions and measurements are given for newborns to a 7-year-old.

Yarn?

This easy baby knitting pattern uses double knitting yarn – 2 by 100g. Something like this 100% cotton soft yarn will be ideal. Cotton yarn makes a good choice for babies as it is less likely to cause allergies like wool or acrylic yarns. The King Cole Cottonsoft DK range comes in 36 shades, many of which are pastel colours.

Needles?

4 mm wooden knitting needles are recommended for beginners and when using the double knit weight of yarn.

Need to Know Knitting Skills?

The best feature of this design is that it is geared towards beginners. You’ll only need to know how

  • to cast on and off,
  • to do a yarn over
  • how to do the knit stitch and
  • how to increase by knitting into the front and back of a stitch

If you need to remind yourself of how to knit into the front and back of a stitch to make the increase – read this post
