easy flat knit chunky beanie hat pattern
Easy Beanie that is Knitted Flat in Chunky Yarn

This easy flat knit chunky hat pattern is ideal for beginners. It’s done on thicker single-point straight needles and uses chunky yarn.

Chunky yarn is easier for beginners. It’s thicker, so the definition of the stitch is clearer, and it’s therefore easier to see what you are doing.

This thicker yarn requires the use of bigger needles, which are more comfortable for new knitters to use. Choosing wooden needles over metal ones will also help a beginner, as the stitches will not slip around as much. Wood is not as slippery as metal so the stitches tend to cooperate better and will stay on the needle.

The circumference of the finished beanie measures 36cm in its unstretched state, but with the 2 by 2 ribbing, it can stretch to around 70cm. The beanie hat is around 25cm long before turning up the brim, but if you like it can be shortened or lengthened easily.

Knitting Skills to make the Beanie Hat

The design involves using simple basic knitting stitches such as

  • casting on,
  • knitting and purling
  • as well as the easy decreasing methods of knitting 2 stitches together and
  • purling 2 stitches together.

Use a Chunky Yarn

Using the recommended chunky yarns makes this design a good one for beginners as it is easier to use heavier-weight yarns and the corresponding thicker needles. This pattern recommends the use of a 100g ball of the Paintbox Simply Chunky yarn range, which has 55 shades from which to choose.

Needle Size?

This design calls for thicker 6,5 mm (US 10.5 ) single-point knitting needles to go with the heavier chunky weight of yarn. Bamboo or wooden ones like the KnitPro Symfonie knitting needles make a good choice for beginners as they are less slippery and therefore not so prone to the stitches falling off the needle.

Other things you might need?

As this project is knitted flat, you’ll need to sew up the seam which will require a tapestry-type needle with a large eye and blunt tip.

You might also like to jazz it up with a pom pom. Read this post to find out about some quick tools that help you make pom poms quickly and easily.

This project is perfect for beginners to tackle, as it only requires using the basic knitting stitches that most new knitters will have mastered. It gives those new to the hobby a way of practising those knitting and purling stitches, and at the same time making something really useful.

Although this is a simple, basic beanie hat, it has texture from the ribbing, which makes it appealing. It’s a very quick project, which is satisfying.
