Do you have some spare double yarn and want to make a beanie hat? This simple double knit hat pattern from Elise Mann is free to use. With the current cost of living crisis, we are all facing at the moment, it makes sense to use up supplies we already have on hand, such as the yarn in your stash. The fact that this pattern has been kindly made free to download and use is a bonus.

As the title of this post suggests, this beanie is a basic one, and does not involve any complicated stitches. This makes it ideal for beginners to use to knit their first beanie hat. The method in which the decreases shape the crown creates a lovely spiral into the centre.

What do you Need?

All you need to make this hat is a 4mm (US 6) 40cm (16 inch) circular needle or a pair of single-point straight needles to go with the double knit weight of yarn.

Knitting Skills Required?

If you know how to knit and purl and how to do the decreasing technique of knitting 2 stitches together then you can do this project.

This design is done on circular knitting needles, but there are instructions on how to adapt it if you only want to use single-pointed straight needles. Knitting in the round with circular needles is not a great deal different from using straight ones. If you want to learn more about knitting in the round, read this post here on how to knit with circular needles

Even though this is a basic design, there are ways to change it up with the variations that the designer suggests. I like that you can use up bits of leftover double-knit yarn to make this. You can’t have too many beanies, so make as many as you can for family and friends – and use up those remnant bits of yarn.
