Knitting Technique by Lynne Watterson
I have been looking at Fair Isle patterns, but decided I needed a knitting technique reference book to learn from first, as I am currently on a quest to improve and advance my knitting skills. I have seen many patterns with beautiful geometric designs that have been created using this stranded colourwork technique. So I am keen to figure out how to do it.
I found many videos and tutorials online that have helped me to get started, but I also like to have a book that I can refer to as well.
After searching, I discovered this book, which I thought I’d share in this post.

Fair Isle Patterns & Technique Instructions
What I was looking for was something that offered both instructions on the techniques, stitch designs and a few patterns to make that used the techniques learned. There are many patterns online, both free and paid. I love having a book on a subject or hobby that I do.
If you want to master any skill, good reference guides are key. While researching this topic, I have discovered that knowing how to perform the skills correctly – like how to work with a different yarn colour in each hand – helps immensely when creating these intricate designs. So it’s well worth investing in them. Books, along with video demonstrations, are an excellent way of immersing yourself in a topic, especially when it comes to learning new techniques.
Clear Illustrations Diagrams & Photos
When I researched this guide written by Lynne Watterson, it appears that many people have used it successfully, judging by the reviews. Those who have bought it say that they have been able to use it to learn the techniques and have been able to make items afterwards. When you “look inside” using the feature to do this, there are clear illustrations, diagrams and photographs.
Introduction – Yarns, Colour Combinations & Equipment
The introductory section covers which yarns are best, how to think about the colours to use and information on what equipment will be needed.
Knitting Basics
There is a section that covers the knitting basics in which you will learn skills like
- how to hold the yarn,

- how to read the charts that come with the designs.

The next section covers stitch guides and actual Fair Isle patterns that can be used to put your new skills into practice.

Finishing Techniques Section
Finally, there is a useful section that deals with finishing techniques such as blocking and pressing, adding beads and other decorative touches – tassels, pompoms, fringing and adding buttons.
What I like about this book is that it offers good coverage of the skills needed to get going with this kind of colour work. As this knitting skill is so diverse, it may not cover every aspect of the topic, but it will get me up and running.
