Knitted Sausage Dog Free Pattern

I found this pattern for a knitted Dachshund puppy dog toy while searching among several other small knitted toys free patterns online. When I saw it was by Amanda Berry, I knew it would be my choice.

This breed is particularly popular with animal lovers. My son has an adorable tan coloured one.

Pattern Details

When you use this dachshund pattern, the finished toy will be around 11cm in length and 7.5cm tall, so not a big toy at all. This makes it suitable for little children’s hands. As it’s a small toy, you will find it is made up quickly, easily done in a weekend or a few evenings during the week maybe. I like projects that are done quickly, as you see the result sooner.

I like the fact that for this sausage dog knitting pattern, you will knit 5 different pieces flat with straight needles – no circular knitting skills required. The pieces are for the head, the body, the ears, the legs and the tail.

What type of Yarn is needed?

The yarn that is used to make this toy is from the 100 per cent cotton DK Paintbox range. I have found this yarn to be lovely and soft, and easy to knit with too. The price is quite affordable as well and they have a huge variety of shades from which to choose.

The yarn colours used are pure black and soft fudge shades. If you fancy creating one with different colours that would work too as these so-called “sausage dogs” are easily recognisable no matter what colour they are. You could use this strategy as a way to use up leftover stash yarn.

What Needles?

You will need 2.5mm (US 1.5) straight single-point knitting needles.

Any Extra Equipment needed?

To complete the project you will need to have a large-eyed tapestry-type needle to sew up the pieces.

You will also need some polyfil toy filling with which to stuff the toy.

If you make the collar for the toy then you will need a plastic snap to join the ends together – or else you could just sew the collar ends together once it is around the neck of the toy dog.

A pair of 6mm bead eyes is suggested for the face, but I prefer to embroider them on for safety reasons.
