While looking for ideas for something to make for my niece’s child, I noticed this Crickelwood owl soft knitted toy pattern.
I decided on this one because it looks more like the real bird than many of the others I came across. The others I saw seemed to have a more cartoonish appearance.
It is not a free pattern, but it is available for a small investment that will help the designer.

I know that I will be able to make several of these as toys, so for me, the small cost is well worth it. My neighbour’s granddaughter has an imaginary owl that she says sits on her shoulder, so I am sure she will love a toy like this.

Get the Pattern
First, you’ll need to get the pattern. Simply download it from the website – click the image to access it.
Next, Choose your Yarn
The recommended yarn weight is a double-knit. I used the Stylecraft Special Double Knitting
If you want your toy to look exactly like the one in the image, then the colours you’ll need are a cream, mocka brown colour and grey.
I love using this yarn as you get a large 100g ball, and it fits very well within my budget. Also, I will be able to make more than one bird.
Needle Size?
The instructions say you will need a pair of straight single-pointed 3.5mm (US size 4) knitting needles to create the toy. I have a pair of shorter length needles specifically for small projects like this. When you’re making a small toy – in this case, 8.5cm tall you don’t need to have those long needles waving around.
What Other Things will you Need?
- a large large-eyed tapestry needle to sew up the parts when making the bird
- some toy filling – around 50g will be enough
- beads for eyes – 5mm is the size recommended
- some embroidery thread in beige to create the bird’s beak
Stitches You Need To Know How to Do
To make this soft knitted toy pattern, you will need to know how to do the basic knitting skills such as –
- casting on and off
- knitting and purling
- increasing, such as knitting into the front and back of a stitch
- decreasing with the knitting and purling 2 stitches together, and the ssk method

What I like about this project is that it includes a small amount of intarsia colourwork. This means it is a chance to learn another knitting technique.
There is no better time to learn how to do intarsia knitting than by practising the technique in a real project like this one.
This is how my little owl turned out …..

The beak is not quite right, but you get the idea!
