While searching for soft toy knitting patterns, I came across this knitted caterpillar free pattern that is beginner-friendly. The designer, Amanda Berry, has made it multi-coloured.

It has been designed by well-known UK designer Amanda Berry. She has created many knitted toys which have been published in knitting magazines so you will know her patterns work!
When completed this toy should come out at around 29cm long.
What Type of Yarn Will You Need?
You will need to use a double knitting yarn to make this toy. Something like these DK colour packs from Lovecrafts would work well.

As this is not a fitted garment you could use any alternative double knitting weight yarn. If you have bits left over in your stash, use those up.
This design uses the following colours – white, pink, orange, yellow, green, light and dark blue. Of course, there is nothing to stop you from being adventurous and using your own colour scheme.
Needle Size?
This design uses a pair of single-pointed 3mm (US 2.5) needles. I just love using these 25cm Knit Pro Symfonie ones because they are smooth and shorter, so ideal for smaller projects.
Other Things You Will Need
- Tapestry Needle
- Toy Filling
- 5mm black bead eyes – or a small amount of black embroidery thread to create them and the mouth
- small bits of felt in white and pink
- fabric glue to stick on the cheeks – or use embroidery thread and sew them on.
Stitches You Need To Know How to Do
This pattern’s for beginners, so it’s a perfect first project for a new knitter to tackle.
You will need to know how to perform
- the knit and purl stitches,
- what stockinette stitch is – knitting one row then purling the next
- how to increase via a kfb = knitting into the front and then the back of the same stitch
- how to decrease via k2tog – knitting 2 stitches together

Once you know how to do these basic knitting skills, then you can definitely make this toy!
I like the fact that this design is suitable for beginners and is a quicker project so it can be completed quite quickly. Change up the colours to personalise yours, or to match an occasion such as a red, green and white one for Christmas time, or a yellow one for Easter, maybe?
