Free Knitting Pattern for Owl Toy with Swiss Darning Details

Use this Free Knitting Pattern to make
Stuffy the Owl Toy

I came across this free knitting pattern for an owl toy while looking for project ideas. I was attracted by the details of his face and body which are done using the Swiss darning technique. I did a quick search on YouTube to see how difficult this method was – and discovered that it’s really quite easy – and looks very effective.

This project is quick and easy so would be worth considering for fundraising ideas – people love owls so they would find it difficult to resist buying them at a local market.

They could also be used as toys for young children and even as decorations for a bedroom, maybe, so lots of ways to use them.

What Yarn Do You Need?

This design uses an Aran weight of yarn. You will only need around 20g of each of the three colours – grey, white and yellow. If you need to buy yarn, then one recommended brand is Rico Essentials Soft Merino Aran. This yarn will give the toy a soft, fluffy feel.

However, as this yarn is 100% wool, it will be a little more pricey, but you can substitute it with another less expensive yarn if you’d prefer. Something like the Painbox Aran Cotton Yarn range is much more budget-friendly.

Needles?

You’ll need a pair of 4.5mm (US 7) single-point straight knitting needles to go with the Aran weight of yarn.

Other Things You’ll Need

You’ll also need a pair of 6mm safety beads for the eyes – or you can embroider them.

A large-eyed tapestry needle to sew up your toy.

Some toy filling to complete the project.

Knitting Skills Needed?

This project is listed as being suitable for beginners, so you will need to know how to

  • cast on and off,
  • do the knit and purl stitches, and
  • basic increasing through knitting into the front and back of a stitch (kfb) and
  • decreasing by knitting 2 stitches together as well as
  • the ssk method.

To refresh your memory or to learn how to do these skills, visit the Learn to Knit category on this website.

You will need to do some Swiss darning (also known as duplicate stitching) to add the details of the owl’s features. This is quite easy to do – watch the video below to see how it’s done.
