While looking for something to make as a gift, I came across this easy floral knit dishcloth pattern for beginners. I decided it was perfect as it is for an elderly resident in our village who loves her garden and flowers in particular. She is turning 90 soon and has all that she needs, so a little handmade gift like this is just what I was looking for.
When I first saw the image of the cloth, I thought maybe it would be quite complicated. However, on taking a closer look, it is done with just purl and knit stitches. All I will need to do is to follow the instructions carefully row by row to make sure I get the purls in the right place as they are what created the design. This means that the design is a suitable project for beginner knitters who have mastered the basic knit and purl stitch skills.

Why You’ll Love This Floral Dishcloth Pattern
- As this is a small knitted dishcloth project it is going to be a whole lot quicker than a bigger item. You’ll get written instructions and a diagram that shows how to make the design.
- The recommended yarn amount is 25g ( around 175 yards / 160 m) so you may even have left over yarn in your stash that can be used up or this.
- Make it as a homemade gift for someone or use it to upgrade your kitchen cloths
How to get the Pattern
This design can be downloaded for a small cost that supports the designer. Just click the image and you’ll be taken to the website where it is being offered by the designer Žana Daniūnienė of KnittedAccent
Along with the step-by-step, row-by-row instructions, you also get a diagram that helps you see how those instructions translate into the finished design.
Materials Needed
Which Yarn Can You Use?
Žana has used a Drops Safran 100% cotton yarn which is a 4ply sport weight yarn.
This yarn is quite a bit thinner than the more usual double-knitting weight yarn for dishcloths. Both will work as it is not fitted garment like a sweater. If you use a double knitting yarn or Aran weight then the size will change and you’ll need to adjust the needle size too. It is possible to use whatever weight yarn you like, but dishcloths must be made in 100 per cent cotton.
Needle Size?
The recommended needle size is 3 mm (US 2.5) if you are using the 4 ply yarn. If you use a thicker weight like a double knitting or Aran you’ll most likely need to use bigger needles such as 4 mm for DK and 4.5mm for the Aran.
Other Equipment
Have a large eyed blunt ended tapestry needle to weave in the ends when you’re done.
Skills Needed
In order to be able to do this project you’ll need to be able to do the following –
- cast on
- knit and purl stitches
- cast off
- carefully follow the written instructions row by row or
- follow the chart that is given
This an excellent small project for beginners to take on as it is not a big cumbersome project and uses only the most basic of knitting skills. As long as you are prepared to follow the detailed instructions then it will be a rewarding project. It is best to print out the pattern and tick off each row as you complete them or follow the chart and tick each line.
What I appreciate best about this pattern is that Zana has taken the time to write it down and make it available for a small investment for beginners to tackle.
In order to hang the dishcloth up I left a long length of yarn at the end and made a length of chains with my crochet hook then made a loop at the corner. If you know the colour scheme of the kitchen then make it in a coloured yarn that matches.
