I love smaller knitting projects like this owl cushion knitting pattern that I found, which has 3 easy cables on it.
I knit these textured cushion designs as gifts. Others of them I add to my increasing collection around our home.
Smaller projects like this one are ideal for the times when you want to learn a new knitting skill like mastering cables or other intermediate skilled work.
This style has 3 easy cables in it. The instructions will give you very clear details on just how to get them done.

This cushion cover is styled as an envelope and is closed with 3 buttons in a ribbed section. The 3 owls are cleverly created from 3 cables that sit next to each other and are knitted on the reverse side of the stockinette stitch that forms the rest of the project. The rest of the cushion is done in easy stockinette stitch.
What Yarn is Needed?
A super Chunky yarn weight is recommended, such as the 100% wool Viking of Norway Naturgarn
Another suggestion is the Super Chunky 100 % Lana Grossa Feltro Range
Needles Size?
As you will be using a super chunky yarn the needles will correspond to that, but they will be around 7mm (US 10.75) to 8mm (US 11) needles.
What Other Things Will Be Needed?
To complete the project, you will need 6 buttons for the owls’ eyes – around 13mm (0.5 in) and matching sewing thread to attach them and 3 big buttons to close the envelope of the cushion.
Of course, you will also need to have a tapestry needle to sew up the sides.
Knitting Stitch Skills Needed?
To tackle this project, you will need to know how to –
- cast on and bind off
- knit and purl
- knit 2 stitches together
- knit into front and back of a stitch
- follow the detailed instructions on how to do the cables

I recommend this knitting project because it is a smaller one – that is not going to take forever to do – and you get to learn a new knitting skill in the cables while practising knits and purls and basic increasing and decreasing techniques. This design will help new knitters to progress to learning more intermediate skills.
