In this project, the easy 9 patch knitted dishcloth design was used but I extended it to make it bigger as I prefer a larger cleaning cloth.
If you’re looking for an easy knitted dishcloth to practice basic knitting stitches, try the 9-patch pattern. (Scroll down to see the link to download the pattern below)
I like to have small, short-term knitting projects on the go especially easy ones. I love this one as it’s simple to do. I can do it while watching TV, listening to music, or when friends come to visit. Once you get the gist of the pattern you don’t have to keep referring back to it.
I will definitely be making more cleaning cloths from this pattern- for the kitchen and bathroom. They make good stocking filler gifts at Christmas, birthday presents or any time gifts. I plan on adding a small bar of special hand soap to some, and a tube of hand cream to others. If you enjoy knitting like I do, it is a good idea to have a dish or washcloth project on the go. Use your TV viewing time to make them up then put them away ready for when you need a gift.
I can’t resist buying the 100% cotton yarn you need to make them. There are so many lovely colours and styles to choose from!
What I like about this design is that it’s reversible.
Time & Difficulty of Project
This project is easy and quick to make up. I like a bigger dishcloth as my hands ache if it’s too small. Instead of using the 3 square by 3 square, I adapted the pattern to have 7 square patches each way. I did a bit of knitting each evening on this project for about 4 days. If you made the actual 9-patch cloth you would be able to get it done in a few hours.
It’s not difficult either. You just need to know how to cast on, knit garter and purl stitches and how to cast off – that’s all!
So, it’s ideal if you are a beginner and want to make something easy, but at the same time get practice with these basic stitches.

The original 9 easy nine-patch pattern I used is free. It can be downloaded from Vicki Mikulak on Ravelry. The pattern is well written and all abbreviations are included.
Tips Challenges & Overview
There is nothing really challenging about this pattern at all – it’s really easy to do. The only thing I will change when I make it again is to try to make the edges neater using the method mentioned in the video below. As it is a simple design I feel it would look neater if I had made the edges more uniform.
Whether you are new to knitting or not, I recommend this patch-style dishcloth pattern. It was quick and easy and will make a lovely gift.
