I used this easy knitted kitchen tea towel pattern with a column design to it to make a gift for a friend of my mother. I also added a dishcloth with an M on it to the gift. You can find the pattern here
I chose this pattern because it has a buttonhole with which you can hang it onto an oven door or rail. It’s handy to have a towel like this in the kitchen – available to dry wet hands! I find that if my kitchen towel isn’t fixed then I’m always hunting around to see where I last put it.
Also, I love to receive handmade gifts so I am sure others would appreciate them too! Have you recently learned to knit? Looking for a knitting pattern to tackle? This pattern might be what you are looking for as it has no complicated knitted stitches.
Time and Level of Difficulty
While this knitting project is not a very quick knit it is not one of those long projects that can take weeks. I spent around 5 or 6 hours making it – a couple of hours over 3 days or so.
The stitches used are basic ones. There are no complicated stitches required to complete this project. As a beginner, you may not know what some of the abbreviations mean. To refresh my memory I searched on YouTube to find videos that explained the techniques.
If you have been doing projects with only the garter and stockinette stitches, then this pattern would be an ideal step up from that.
Why you might ask? Well, because you’ll find out how to do knitting techniques such as
- knitting 2 together,
- knitting through the back loop,
- slipping stitches and passing slipped stitches over, and
- knitting front and back of a stitch
Don’t worry if you have no clue how to do this as I have included some videos to show you how to do them.

Wish I was knitting at the Lake
The towel is knitted from the bottom edge upwards. It has a 3 stitch garter border all the way around. The hanging part of the project comprises a 2-row repeated pattern which forms the column design.
After 13 inches of knitting, you then make the top of the towel by following the 12 rows of decreasing. Finally, the top tab section is knitted with 39 short rows. This tab folds over to allow you to hang it on a rail with a button.
