The finished project stands at only 3.5cm tall so you’ll need only oddments of yellow and white double knitting yarn. This is a useful pattern to use your stock of stash yarn.
Yarn Needed?
100% cotton yarn is recommended in the pattern but any yarn will work it will just change the size you ultimately get.
Knitting Needles?
You’ll need a pair of 2.75mm (US 2) straight single-pointed needles – recommended size.
What Else Do You Need?
- some toy filling or cotton wool,
- a tapestry needle to sew up with,
- two beads for eyes (or embroider them)
- and scraps of fabric for the beak.
- glue
Knitting Skills?
A beginner should be able to make these cute little darlings as you only need to know how to
- cast on and off,
- knit and purl
- increase by knitting into the front and back of a stitch – kfb
- decrease through knitting 2 stitches together at the same time
- picot cast off method
The only extra technique new knitters might not have come across is the picot cast off method used in this pattern to create the broken edging to the knitted eggshell. The instructions on how to do this are detailed so it is just a matter of following the steps carefully.
If you want more of a tutorial here is a video from Norman at Nimble Needles that illustrates the technique. As you’ll see in the video there are many ways of doing it to create different effects. Watch the video to see what the method is all about and to get the gist of it then follow the pattern step by step.
So there you have an easy Easter knitting project to make these little knitted chicks in their shells.
