Now that our Easter celebrations are over this year, it’s time to think about a new set of knitting project ideas. With over 3 weeks to go, I thought I would collect together knitting pattern ideas to celebrate King Charles’ coronation.

POST UPDATE Even though the Coronation of King Charles 111 is over I’ve left this post up as the knitting patterns provide projects that can be made as toys, or are still useful for UK national celebrations in the future
Apart from all the controversy about who will, or will not be in attendance, people here in the UK love to have street parties, decorate their homes and shop windows, and generally enjoy the pomp and pageantry of it all. So, if you are looking for some ideas for knitted items with a royal theme that you can make this post should help.

Knitted King Charles Bear
Use this free pattern to make a Charles bear to commemorate the coronation and delight a young child.
The pattern is knitted flat on straight knitting needles (2.75mm or US no 2), not on circulars. It is knitted up in 100% cotton DK yarn from Paintbox
It uses all the basic knitting stitches such as –
- casting on and off
- pulling through to bind off
- Knit and purl stitches
- increasing techniques such as knitting into the front and back of a stitch, ie kfb
- decreasing stitches via ssk – slip one stitch knitwise, then slip the next purlwise then knit into the front of the two slipped stitches
Short Rows in Knitting
The more intermediate technique used in a small section in this pattern, and which beginners might not have come across is short row knitting and wrap and turn. If you’re a newish knitter who wants to make this soft toy bear there is no reason why you can’t, if you are prepared to learn how to knit short rows.
The pattern does give you a summary of how to do the technique but to make it clearer I have included a video below that demonstrates it.
The short rows create an extra amount of fabric that helps to create the shaping of the collar of the gown.
Knitted Union Jack Blanket
Make up this colourful patriotic blanket to keep an older relative warm during the street party or lay it on the lawn for a picnic.
This knitting pattern is made up of 4 knitted squares that fit together to make up the Union Jack motif.
You’ll need Acrylic Paintbox Aran yarn and 5mm ( US no 8 ) single-pointed straight knitting needles.
The completed blanket is 122cm by 122cm. If you wanted it bigger you simply have to add more squares and rows.
This pattern has been set at the intermediate level. Each of the squares are knitted diagonally from one corner to the opposite. This is done by way of increasing stitches using the make 1 (m1) technique and changing the colours of yarn to form the design. Mitred borders are also involved.
The skills needed are as follows –
- casting on and off
- knit and purl
- make 1 stitch – m1
- knitting 2 stitches together k2tog
- a decrease via the ssk method – slip one stitch knitwise, then another purlwise then knit those 2 together through the front
- psso – pass slipped stitch over knitted stitch
Knit Your Own Celebration Bunting
Decorate your home, garden or street by knitting up your own bunting to celebrate the Coronation.
This pattern is available at no cost and includes instructions for both knitting and crocheted versions.
This one is made using 4mm single pointed knitting needles and DK cotton yarn.
A beginner will be able to do this project.
Knitted Coronation Bunting with Roses
Here is another free knitting pattern with the addition of roses on each flag.
There are large photos and detailed instructions to show you exactly how to make these up – and it is a beginner-friendly pattern.
You’ll need double knitting yarn and a pair of 3.5mm (US 4) knitting needles.
Knitted Chains for Celebration Decorations
These knitted chains are another way to decorate your space. They can be used again once the Coronation is over for other celebrations such as family birthdays, anniversaries and any special events.
Again this is a beginner-level knitting pattern. There are instructions for both knitting and crochet.
The designer has used 4mm (US 6 ) knitting needles and cotton DK yarn.
Knitting Pattern for King Charles lll Soft Toy
Download this pattern for a small investment and make a soft toy for young children to play with and learn about the monarchy.
It is set at the level of beginner knitters and comes with detailed photos and instructions.

Knitting Pattern for a Crown
Download the free knitting pattern for this crown by clicking the image.
Besides a Coronation street party these items can be used for birthdays, Christmas parties and even as part of a fancy dress costume.
This one uses Aran yarn and 5mm knitting needles.
The skill level is given as intermediate but if you are confident beginner and are willing to look up the techniques you are not familiar with then you can complete this project.
The main intermediate skill required is to make a bobble – mb. I have included a video that demonstrates various methods of making a bobble in knitting.
Knitted Teacosy Patterns for a Coronation Tea Party
If you’re having a garden tea party or even one along your street then you are sure to need a tea cosy to keep that pot of tea warm. Here are some patterns that fit a royal theme.
Knitted King Charles Tea Cosy
Make this intricate tea cosy that features King Charles complete with crown and sceptre and orb.
Use the details on this tea cosy to teach children the significance of them and what they represent.
This one is an intermediate-level design as you can imagine, and requires some modelling but it comes with detailed instructions and photos.
Tartan Design Knitted Tea Cosy Pattern
This is another tea cosy that can also be used for the Coronation weekend.
The colour work in the tartan design means that it is an intermediate-level pattern, but could be a good project with which to learn how to follow a chart and do colour work in knitting.
This design uses the popular double knitting yarn weight so you may already have enough yarn lying around in your stash to make it.
Crown and Street-Themed Tea Cosy Knitting Pattern
This intricate design requires an intermediate knitting skill level and is available to download for a small investment.
It is knitted in a chunky weight yarn so will keep your tea really hot for longer.
It is fun, colourful and will definitely become a conversation starter with those who join you to celebrate the Coronation.
Knitting Pattern for a Union Jack Cushion
Decorate your home for the Coronation with this knitted cushion that has a Union Jack design to it.
Use it as a project in which you learn how to do Fair Isle knitting.
You will need to use Aran weight yarn and 5mm knitting needles.
So there you have several coronation-themed knitting patterns that are quick projects to make up for your garden or street parties. I hope that you’ve found one that you like.
