Have you ever felt a bit disappointed in the way some of your knitting projects appear? Recently I wanted to know how to make a right-leaning decrease without K2tog that gives a flatter appearance.
When you knit 2 stitches together the second one sits on top of the other which makes a definite ridge and the knitting is much bulkier in that area. Sometimes it looks ok but in other situations, it is not desirable. If you’re knitting with heavier weight yarns like chunky then the improvement is more marked.
After a quick search, I found this easy little technique and a helpful video that demonstrates it nicely. So, I thought I would share it here.
Here are the 5 easy steps
- Knit to one stitch before the place where you want to do the decrease
- Knit one stitch as you normally would
- Slip that knitted stitch back on the left needle -purlwise ( so as not to twist that stitch)
- Pass the second stitch on the left needle over the first one in a purlwise manner
- Now move that stitch back onto the right needle (purlwise) as it has been worked already and does not need to be knitted again
It may take a few more moves to do this but after some practice, you’ll see it is easy enough to do. I think it results in a much flatter knitted fabric which in some situations is what you want.
