Are you searching for Mother’s Day knitting projects you can make as a gift to express your love and thanks?
I have also been looking around for knitting gift ideas for my mother. Handmade items show that you care enough to plan and create something, especially for them.
I have put together 5 ideas that I think would make lovely gifts for mothers and will be completed quickly and easily. Hopefully one (or more) of these ideas will be what you’re looking for.
Knit a Plant Pot Cover
A quick and easy idea would be to knit a cover for a plant pot. Where I live many nurseries sell colourful or glossy leaved single plants quite reasonably. No one likes to look at an ugly brown plastic pot so an idea would be to jazz it up with a knitted cosy. The benefit of this suggestion is that you can knit these up quite quickly.
A chunky 100% cotton weight yarn works best as it holds the shape better than other acrylic yarns.
You will find the full instructions to knit it on The Merry Thought website HERE
Knitted Dishcloth or Wash Cloth
I love making these dishcloths and washcloths! They are very quick and small projects that you can do around other longer ones. I also like using them as a means to try out different knitting stitches.
You will need to make sure that you use 100% cotton yarn. This natural material can stand up to being in the water without losing its shape.
There are loads of free patterns to use. I find many of the ones I use on Pinterest and through searching online.
Knit a Mug Cozy
This is a similar idea to the plant pot cover above but this time you cover a coffee (or tea mug) – you could in fact adapt this pattern for a plant pot too.
Watch the video below which gives precise instructions on how to make these little items. One of the good things about this idea is that you don’t need a lot of yarn – so you can use stash stocks here. Thicker weight yarns like Aran / Worsted and chunky work best.
Knitted Cowl Pattern
Here in the UK Mother’s Day or Mothering Sunday as most people here refer to it is celebrated in March. It is still pretty chilly then so another idea would be to make a knitted cowl. There are many free knitting patterns from which to choose.
Here is one I found that I like. The yarn used is Malabrigo Worsted yarn which is 100 percent Merino and will be soft.
This cowl pattern is done in garter stitch mostly with a few rounds of dropped stitch to add a bit of interest. It is free and you can find the pattern HERE
Chunky Knitted Cushion Cover
Another idea that I think most mothers would just love is a cushion cover knitted in chunky yarn. Choose a colour that matches the scheme in their home.
I found this Parkway Cushion knitting pattern which I think is attractive as it is quite simple to do but has a textured look and feel. It says for intermediate skills but the stitches required are the basic knit and purl stitches. As it is worked in a super chunky yarn it should be quick to make up.
