dk scarf knitting pattern 1 cable design

I discovered this free DK scarf knitting pattern with one cable down the middle and one-by-one ribbing on either side. As I have a couple of balls of double knitting yarn left over from a previous project, I can make use of them.

Although this is not a beginner project due to the cable, it could be an opportunity for a new knitter to progress and learn one of the intermediate skills that of cable knitting.

The rest of the project involves the simple knit one purl one ribbing pattern. The middle section requires you to make a cable with 6 stitches – 3 stitches on either side and twist it to the left. Watch the video below to see how easy it is to create a 3/3 left cable cross

This method assumes you have a cable needle. If you don’t have one, you can use a shorter double-pointed needle or even just another needle. I found doing this quite cumbersome as the third needle was a bit long and got in the way.

After searching online I discovered that there is a way to make a cable cross without using a cable needle. Watch the video below to see how it is done.

This design from Ajeng Poyeng uses double knitting weight yarn or light worsted and 4mm straight single-point knitting needles.

If you don’t have the right yarn in your stash here is a selection of yarns you can use – DK weight yarn

I like this project as it gives those who do not know yet how to make a cable the chance to learn it while doing a smaller project that will not be overwhelming.
